RYNNE, Cathal
The McGill Bermuda Scholarship
Cathal attended Saltus Grammar School between 2003 and 2016, securing 10 GCSEs (9 at A and above), which placed him fourth academically overall. He then went on to the Saltus Graduate Years programme and completed eight APs and an A-Level in French. He was on the Headmaster's Honour Role and received the Academic Attainment Award in his penultimate year at Saltus. Upon graduating, he was additionally awarded the Ruth Henderson Performing Arts Award and the Subject Prize for Physics.
In 2013, he was awarded the Alliance Francaise Summer Scholarship to study in France for four weeks, learning the language and exploring the local culture. Cathal was also head boy at Saltus and, with his contemporary head girl, spearheaded a resurgence of the Student Council at Saltus. He has represented the school and Bermuda in public speaking and was part of the Bermuda team attending the UNIS-UN Youth Conference in New York in 2015. He has also completed the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards.
Cathal enjoys music and the arts. He has performed leading and support roles in numerous musicals and plays while at school. He also participated in the Bermuda Shakespeare Schools festival and held the lead male role in 2014 BMDS Christmas Pantomime. Cathal was also a member of the Saltus Senior Orchestra, playing violin until 2012 when he transitioned to become the Orchestra’s bass guitarist. More recently, he has also played as the bassist for the Senior Wind Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band. Cathal won the Ruth Henderson Award for Music in 2015.
Cathal has a wide interest in sport. He was a member of the Dolphins Swim Team and competed in local and overseas meets with the team for six years. He was also a volunteer Swim America swimming instructor and, most recently, a junior coach for Dolphins. In addition to swimming for Saltus, he also competed on the school's cross country team and was a player for his house in a number of activities, including foortball, rugby, softball, volleyball and track and field. He was Watlington House Captain.
Cathal has always played a role in the community. He has worked as a volunteer lifeguard. He has also been a maths and science tutor to younger students and a Sunday school assistant.
Cathal will enter McGill in September, 2016 to study for a Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
