IMPORTANT DATES*interview dates subject to update, candidates will be notified:
Application Deadline Date: 14th July, 2024
Tentative Bermuda Interview Dates: 1st to 7th August, 2024
The Dudley and Deborah Butterfield Scholarship and the McGill Bermuda Scholarship (individually, the "Scholarship") will be offered in alternate years, the former being first offered in September, 1991.
As a general statement of intention, the Scholarships are to be awarded to first time entrants to the University (as opposed to in-course students) although, in circumstances of exceptional ability, the Trustees may award the Scholarship to an in-course student.
The Scholarships will be the responsibility of a Selection Committee in Bermuda (the "Committee"). The Committee will, in general, be comprised of three members including (i) a McGill graduate Trustee of the Trust, (ii) a representative of the local McGill Society in Bermuda and (iii) a representative appointed by the University. The Principal of the University is a member ex-officio of the Committee. The affairs of the Committee and the day-to-day administration of the Scholarships will be the responsibility of the Secretary to the Selection Committee (the "Secretary").
Applicants should apply directly to McGill for admission to the University. At the same time, or shortly after making application to the University, applicants should apply to the Secretary for an Application Form for the Scholarship or download the Application Form from this site. The Form should be submitted as soon as possible but, in any event, on or before the Application Deadline Date (about 30th June of the year in which the Scholarship is to be awarded).
Applicants should choose their referees carefully and it is important that at least two of them be persons who have taught the applicant. Applicants should either request referees to send Reference Letters directly to the Secretary, or provide existing copies of Reference Letters with their applications.
Shortly after the close of applications, the Secretary will advise the University (through the Office of Student Aid and Scholarships) of the names of each of the applicants (together with a copy of their completed Application Forms). As soon as practicable thereafter, the University (either the Office of Student Aid and Scholarships or Admissions Office) will revert to the Secretary with the names of the candidates who are, in the view of the University, of sufficient academic standing for the purposes of holding the Scholarship (the "qualified applicants"). If possible, the University will rank the qualified applicants in order of academic merit and will make such other comments as the University may think helpful to the Committee.
The Committee will, at its discretion, call to an interview such of the qualified applicants as it considers appropriate. In practice, the Committee would hope to interview all qualified applicants but may, in certain circumstances, prepare a short list on the basis of the submitted documentation.
The interviews are anticipated to be of approximately 30 minutes duration. During interviews, the Committee will endeavour to learn more of the candidate's general abilities and character. The aim of the Committee is to determine which of the candidates seems to possess all-round ability and is most likely to make a balanced contribution to the community in the future.
Following selection of a candidate (the "Scholar"), the Committee (through the Secretary) will advise the University (through the Office of Student Aid and Scholarships). As soon as practicable thereafter, the Office of Student Aid and Scholarships will confirm to the Secretary the University's confirmation of the appointment of the Scholar.
Following confirmation of the award of the Scholarship, the Secretary will make arrangements to contact the Scholar and to advise the local media as appropriate.
Conflicts: The Committee will operate a strict policy to avoid actual or apparent conflicts of interests between applicants and members of the Committee. Prior to the holding of interviews and the selection of the Scholar, the members of the Committee will be requested to confirm that they have no connection (whether family or otherwise) with any of the qualified applicants which is likely to be, or to be perceived to be, a conflict of interest.
THE SELECTION COMMITTEE, SUBJECT TO ANY ADVERSE COMMENTS OF THE TRUSTEES OR, IN APPROPRIATE CIRCUMSTANCES, THE UNIVERSITY, MAY AMEND THE FOREGOING PROCEDURES, THE SCHOLARSHIP NOTICE OR APPLICATION FORM.
